Joe is a former federal & local prosecutor, a former county solicitor, a father, and the son of a Pakistani immigrant.
The son of a Pakistani engineer who came to America to build bridges, Joe Khan has always fought to give everyone a seat at the table. Joe fully embodies the spirit and mission of Second Generation, and not just because he’s the son of Muslim and Catholic parents from a Jewish neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia — Joe was an original co-founder of Second Generation back in 2018 and served as our the Chair through our first year and a half of advocacy.
After earning degrees from Swarthmore College and the University of Chicago Law School, where he was taught by President Barack Obama, Joe quickly established himself as a legal champion who will hold bad actors accountable and stand up against powerful interests. He began his career prosecuting sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Joe then spent the next decade serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, where he resolved high-stakes matters across southeastern Pennsylvania and led the historic City Hall corruption probes in Allentown and Reading. Before his run for Pennsylvania Attorney General, Joe served as the Bucks County Solicitor, where he defended our democracy against Donald Trump and the Republicans’ attempts to overturn the 2020 election. His tireless dedication to justice earned him the 2021 Outstanding Solicitor Award and the 2022 Government Lawyer of the Year Award.
As a father and experienced attorney, Joe not only understands the issues facing Pennsylvanians, but also how to best overcome them. Abortion Rights — Joe is a veteran sex crimes prosecutor and the son of a nurse who lost women in the ER because they lacked access to safe and legal abortions. He didn’t back down when he was targeted for being the only county solicitor in Pennsylvania to use his office to support access to the abortion pill, and he won’t back down from protecting reproductive freedoms for all Pennsylvanians as Attorney General.
Public Safety — Joe is the only candidate for Attorney General who not only reduced crime rates as a federal prosecutor but also served in the county-level offices of Solicitor and District Attorney. Whether it’s stopping gun violence, preventing quality-of-life offenses, or prosecuting corporate criminals, Joe will provide statewide leadership while empowering county governments with the support that they need to protect their communities.
Housing Justice — Joe understands that Pennsylvanians need bold action on the housing crisis impacting our communities. That is why as Attorney General, Joe will establish Pennsylvania’s first Housing Justice Unit. Whether it is protecting children from dangers like bed bugs and lead poisoning or defending our communities and neighbors from reckless exploitation, Joe is a proven fighter who will balance the scales of justice to ensure Pennsylvanians have safe and affordable housing.
Environmental Rights — Joe is a proven champion of environmental rights. As Bucks County Solicitor, Joe took legal action to prevent fracking in the Delaware River Basin and launched a major lawsuit against manufacturing giants 3M, DuPont, and Tyco for polluting our water and soil with PFAS (forever chemicals). As Attorney General, Joe will take aggressive action to protect our environment by holding energy companies accountable for the damage they have done to our planet and the health risks facing our children.
